About Game:
In Catan (By Funskool) (formerly The Settlers of Catan), players try to be the dominant force on the island of Catan by building settlements, cities, and roads. On each turn dice are rolled to determine what resources the island produces. Players collect these resources (cards)—wood, grain, brick, sheep, or stone—to build up their civilizations to get to 10 victory points and win the game.

Component:
19 terrain hexes (four sheep, four wheat, four wood, three brick, three ore, and one desert).
Six sea frame pieces.
18 circular number tokens.
A black/grey robber pawn.
Four sets of wooden player pieces in four different colors each containing five settlements, four cities, and 15 roads.
25 development cards consisting of 14 knight/soldier cards, 6 progress cards, and 5 victory points.
Resource cards of each terrain hex except for the desert.
Four building costs cards, one for each player.
“Longest Road” and “Largest Army” award cards.
Two dice, one red, one yellow.
Extra harbor pieces for placement of random harbors (optional).

Game Play

Setup includes randomly placing large hexagonal tiles (each showing a resource or the desert) in a honeycomb shape and surrounding them with water tiles, some of which contain ports of exchange. Number disks, which will correspond to die rolls (two 6-sided dice are used), are placed on each resource tile. Each player is given two settlements (think: houses) and roads (sticks) which are, in turn, placed on intersections and borders of the resource tiles. Players collect a hand of resource cards based on which hex tiles their last-placed house is adjacent to. A robber pawn is placed on the desert tile.

A turn consists of possibly playing a development card, rolling the dice, everyone (perhaps) collecting resource cards based on the roll and position of houses (or upgraded cities—think: hotels) unless a 7 is rolled, turning in resource cards (if possible and desired) for improvements, trading cards at a port, and trading resource cards with other players. If a 7 is rolled, the active player moves the robber to a new hex tile and steals resource cards from other players who have built structures adjacent to that tile.

Points are accumulated by building settlements and cities, having the longest road and the largest army (from some of the development cards), and gathering certain development cards that simply award victory points. When a player has gathered 10 points (some of which may be held in secret), he announces his total and claims the win.

Shuffle Review

The box of Catan is quite big and heavy. It has loads of components in various sizes that make it necessary to adhere to the age limit for the game. The box is tight and protective of the components. The components are of good quality, the building components are made of wood and thus essentially unbreakable. The game will not require any extra care than any other game.

The game is very variable. The placement of the resource hexes, dice tokens, and harbours can be changed with every game to ensure a different play every time. The inclusion of the ‘robber’ in the game makes for a hilarious move in the game as the players thwart their opponents to be the winner. The game is long and may occasionally be monotonous due to unfavorable dice rolls but the development cards and the special bonus cards have the capability of turning over the game. Another reviewer aptly termed the game, ‘Social Sciences in a box and we totally agree.

It has won many awards like the 1996: Origins Award for Best Fantasy or Science Fiction Board Game, 2001: Origins Hall of Fame and 2006: Games Magazine Hall of Fame.
