Blokus is an abstract strategy game published and distributed by Mattel Games.

The aim of the game is to exhaust all player tiles by placing them on the board by obeying a single placement rule, i.e. the tiles should only connect with one’s own colour diagonally.

Game Specifications:

Age Groups: 7+

No. of Players: 2-4

Game Duration: 20-30 minutes

Skills to Learn: Territory Building, Strategic Play, Grid Coverage, observation skills.

The Box and Components:

At first glance, the box is nothing to fawn over. It is a weak cardboard box, out of which the game board and components slide out. This makes the players overly conscious of the state of the box, for it can be easily torn.

In contrast to this, the board has grooves cut into it that do not let the blocks move from their positions once played, making way for easy play.

The 84 blocks are divided into 21 pieces of 4 colours each. The blocks have been constructed in groups of 2,3,4 or 5 single tiles in various shapes and one tile block.

The Game:

The players start from their respective corners and play turn by turn to lay out all their tiles on the board. The game tests the strategy skills of a player to spill over into enemy territory and continue their game.

Easy in the beginning, the players have to be very smart about their play to ensure a gameplay that leaves space open for their blocks without losing it to an opponent.

This makes the game very addictive as even after losing, the players are invested in knowing the last player standing with the least number of tiles in his hand. Plus, the different layout of the colourful tiles spread on the grid board is really pretty.

A smart move by the player almost always results in mini applause by the other players even as the former reaches one step closer to victory.

Final Words:

Blokus is an exceptional game that can attract people to play, which is easy to learn & has good replayability. The gameplay attracts the youth, while the children are more attracted to the colours at first. It is a fun game to be played in the house or on your travel trips.

HAPPY SHUFFLING!
